Personal branding or public speaking: what to learn if you want to land opportunities as a speaker
You want to give talks and share what you know. You look for training and find courses on public speaking, stage presence, and building a personal brand.
These are related skills, but it is useful to distinguish the problem each one addresses.
Public speaking develops the skills needed to communicate with an audience. A personal brand helps make your expertise visible, define the topic you want to be recognized for, and make it easier for people to understand your contribution.
If you want to develop opportunities as a speaker, you need to consider both what you can deliver on stage and how someone comes to think of you.
The organizer needs to imagine your contribution
The person planning an event has an audience, an objective, and specific constraints.
Your expertise must be able to connect with that context.
“I give talks on leadership” offers a starting point. You still need to understand for whom, from what perspective, and what the audience could learn.
A description explaining how you support professionals in their first experience leading teams makes it easier to imagine a possible participation.
Precision makes it easier to assess the fit.
The topic needs an idea you can develop
Having experience in a sector does not mean you should talk about everything that happens in it.
It is best to choose a conversation in which you can offer depth.
What problem do you observe? What interpretation do you propose? What decisions could the audience reconsider after hearing you?
A talk needs a journey. The audience must be able to follow the connection between the problem, the examples, and the learning.
That structure can also be developed in articles, interviews, and videos.
Your content can show how you explain
A clip from a talk, a brief explanation, or a professional conversation allows people to observe your way of communicating.
They do not replace the full experience of an event, but they do provide information.
The person evaluating you can hear how you develop an idea, what examples you use, and how you connect with a problem.
That is why it is best for your content to relate to the topics for which you want to receive opportunities.
Constantly talking about unrelated matters can make it harder to identify your specialty.
My book also needed a visible position
In my case, writing a book was related to attracting the attention of a publisher who could recognize the value of what I had to offer.
That possibility required a recognizable conversation around my work.
Sharing ideas about personal branding and digital businesses allowed me to show a perspective that could be developed in greater depth.
Every opportunity has its own process. What you can work on is the clarity with which you make your expertise visible and the consistency with which you sustain it.
Make it easier for them to find the information they need
A professional page can bring together your introduction, topics, relevant experience, samples, and contact information.
The information should make it easy to understand what you do without forcing someone to reconstruct your career from scattered publications.
If you do not yet have recorded talks, you can start by showing your own explanations. Honestly identify what is a prepared sample and what corresponds to an actual participation.
Credibility also depends on how you present your expertise.
What is best to learn first?
If you have difficulty structuring a presentation or speaking in front of an audience, public speaking training can help you develop those skills.
If your expertise exists, but your digital presence does not make it easy to recognize your specialty, you need to review your positioning and your communication.
You can develop both areas. Securing an invitation and delivering a good experience are connected parts of the work.
